Who has seen the new advert on TV with Jamie shopping with a customer. Rather fun! I feel like I need a personal shopper at times.
I think it great that Sainsbury’s is helping us eat tasty food at a healthy price post budget! Good thinking.

My ideais for ''really cheesey macaroni cheese' with loads of Parmesan to give it that extra cheesy-ness and add in some salad to garnish. Feed four of us and usually costs about a fiver.

Does anyone else have any tasty ideas for feeding the family for a fiver?

This is kind of like Ready Steady Cook.. dare I say.. lol! I haven't seen that ad.. but shall look out for it..! (Hardly watch TV these days.. but have seen some of the JS ads!) Oliver's a real neat chef, love his style :>

How about spaghetti bolognese.. you could go all round value on that - no sweat.. probably adding up to 3.99 or 4.50 if you're lucky with the price inflation taken into account!! Value spaghetti.. value toms.. value onions.. and value mince meat!

PS how about adding a little bit of pepper or chilli sauce to give it a finishing touch! My 4 yr old cousin adds Heinz ketchup to everything! So hillarious.....!! :)

The beef in beer casserole in the slow cooker comes in at just over £5. The cabbage we ate with it cost us 20p. We also had some carrots and boiled potatoes + the beer.

I make a butterbean, tomato and onion casserole with herbs served with bread and with a couple of rashers of bacon on the top and that is a cheap dish.

It's a great pity that all the recipes on the Sainsbury's website for feeding the family for a fiver are meat based.

Vegetarian meals are healthier, and you get more for your fiver.

You could use the Sainsbury's recipes by buying Quorn instead of meat, but it would be better to do some vegetarian recipes that aren't pretending to be meat based.

We like making Indian recipes, they have a great range of vegetarian dishes such as a delicious potato curry, fragrant spiced rice, tangy yoghurt, warming dhal, all very tasty and cheap to make.

I agree. Meat is not the only protein and beans are often cheaper.

I have found Anjum Anand's food good and easy to cook - she has reduced the amount of fat in traditional dishes. I love it too when I find one of her viideos online to guide me through a recipe. There are so many different types of lentil. Chickpeas are delicious curried.

Italian food is often vegetarian as well with lots of different beans. Aubergine and mozzarella bake with tomatoes and onions is cheaper too than many meat dishes.

£5 a meal isnt all that cheap - thats still £105 a week to feed your family... which is reasonable and normal, but not exactly dirt cheap.
