All I got for Christmas is a healthy roast potato

An entirely new potato took the nation by storm last Christmas, after British food scientists retraced the footsteps of Sir Walter Raleigh.  It looks, cooks and tastes like no other potato ever seen – because it’s the first new potato species to be introduced to Britain for over 400 years.

It’s a major breakthrough, which could have a huge impact upon the appearance and taste of potatoes on millions of dinner plates all over the UK during the festive season.

Unlike any other potato, the new Taste the difference Phureja (pronounced “fur-eka”) potato, has an unusual golden coloured flesh and has such a sweet buttery taste, there is no need to add any extra butter.   It’s also higher in carotinoids than any other potato.  Carotinoids are usually found in carrots and sweet potatoes and has several benefits.

Our senior buyer, John Maylam says: “Knowing how many spuds we’re all likely to eat over Christmas, this is a blessing!  They roast perfectly, without the need for duck fat or other high calorific oils.  It really is great news for all of us spud lovers this Christmas!”

The Taste the difference Phureja has been bred directly from a primitive potato plant that has been unchanged for the last 7000 years, with original flavours usually found only in the native South America.   Years have been spent analysing this and other potatoes taste characteristics.  The Phureja was found to be particularly rich in Umami - the fifth taste sense (along with sweet, bitter, salt and sour) and contributes to the moreishness of food.
