Encouraging carrier bag re-use - our new text service
Now we’ve removed our free bags from the checkouts to encourage bag re-use, we're introducing a helpful text service to help you remember to bring your bags and kick your 'bag habit'.
Here's all you have to do:
- To help you remember to bring your bags when you go shopping, text 63838* with the specific day and time you'd like your weekly text reminder (e.g Saturday 11am or Thursday 2pm).
- You'll get a confirmation text with the day and time that you've requested your text reminder to be sent each week. You'll then receive one text message per week at that time until 31 December 2008.
- If at any point you want to stop or change the day and time for the text reminders, just text 'STOP' to 63838*. You will then need to sign up again by texting 63838* with your new day and time (as in Step 1).
We also reward our customers with Nectar points for re-using their bags. Since June 2008, every time customers reuse a bag in our stores they receive 1 Nectar point for each bag re-used.
Why are you removing plastic carrier bags from the checkouts?
We want to reduce our impact on the environment by reducing the number of carrier bags we issue and have pledged to reduce our carrier bag usage by 50% by April 2009. We hope by making this change we’ll encourage our customers to bring back and re-use their bags.
Does this mean you will start charging for carrier bags?
No, we believe that it’s important to give our customers a choice. We’ve listened to our customers and they continue to tell us they don’t want us to charge for bags, but they do want us to help them to make a difference on this important issue.
Will you be doing this in convenience stores?
We know that in our convenience stores customers are often only buying a couple of items and don’t want a carrier bag or don’t have enough items to fill one of our standard size bags. We’ve introduced smaller sized bags for our customers who are just buying a few items. Our smaller bag is made of 50% recycled plastic. As they’re also so much smaller, they uses only half the plastic of our standard carrier bags.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
- *Texts sent to 63838 will be charged at your standard network rate. Network charges vary depending on your network and call plan. If you are unsure please contact your network provider.
- When you sign up to the text service using the above instructions, you’ll receive one text per week until 31 December 2008.
- All text messages that Sainsbury’s send to you will contain ‘unsubscribe’ instructions. To unsubscribe text ‘STOP’ to 63838*. Then you will receive a text from Sainsbury’s confi rming the service has stopped.
- Any texts you receive from Sainsbury’s will be free of charge. However, if you are outside of the UK when you receive your bags text reminder your network provider will charge you for receiving this text.
- All text messages sent from Sainsbury’s can be identified by the word Sainsbury’s at the beginning.
- Sainsbury’s is not making a profi t from this service.
- Sainsbury’s aims to preserve your privacy at all times and will not disclose your personal information or your phone number to third parties unless legally required to do so.
