The history of Sainsbury's coffee

Although Sainsbury is best known for it’s Red label tea, in fact our Original blend ground coffee has a heritage dating back to at least 1911.

Coffee cherry bush.
In those days much coffee was grown in Ethiopia, and shipped from the port of Mocha, in modern day Yemen, as Ethiopia has no coastline. That’s why today people often ask for a Mocha coffee.  Coffee is the world’s most popular beverage. More than 400 billion cups are consumed each year.  It is a world commodity that is second only to oil.

Fresh coffee beans
Fresh is best
Sainsbury’s early advertising used a strap-line of ‘always freshly ground’ and even today that still holds true.  That’s why we use the very best pure Arabica coffees and packaging materials to ensure you enjoy your coffee at the peak of freshness.

There’s nothing like the taste and smell of fresh ground coffee and that’s why we take very special care to ensure that the product is packed fresh to prolong its life on the shelf.

Sainsbury’s Ground coffee is roasted, ground then packed into specially developed bags which are easy to open, yet have enough barrier properties to prevent oxygen getting in to the pack and staling the coffee.  In fact the coffee film is so good at sealing in the goodness that we have to add a special one way valve to the packs, otherwise the packs would ‘blow’ as freshly roasted coffee naturally gives off carbon dioxide as it settles in the bag after packing.

So the next time you are buying fresh ground coffee, ask yourself does the bag have a freshness valve…?
