Supporting responsible drinking

Alcohol labelling

Most of us like a drink from time to time but if you drink alcohol it’s important to drink responsibly, this means staying within the safe guidelines.

Safe intakes

  • For women no more than 2-3units of alcohol a day.
  • For men no more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day.

By the end of 2009 all Sainsbury’s own-label alcoholic drinks bottles will have this information on the label.
Here are a few examples of the number of units in some alcoholic drinks:

1 pint of beer or lager (4% ABV) = 2.3 units
1 pint of cider (5.3% ABV) = 3 units
25ml (a pub measure) of spirits (40% ABV) = 1 unit
175ml glass of wine (12.5% ABV) = 2.2 units
Alcopops (5.5% ABV) = 1.5units

More information on the units in various drinks and safe drinking visit drinkaware.co.uk website.

  • For good health it’s a good idea to spread your drinking over the week and avoid binge drinking.
  • If you do drink too much, you should avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours to give your body a chance to recover.
  • Avoid alcohol if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.

Know your limits

Many alcoholic drinks will state on the label exactly how many units of alcohol 1 measure contains (by the end of 2009 all Sainsbury’s own-label alcoholic drinks bottles will have this information on the label).
