The labelling of allergens at Sainsbury’s

Our allergy labelling

Look out for the allergy labelling on Sainsbury's products.
We work hard to ensure our labelling is clear and concise. We are legally required to declare the presence of certain allergens, where they are included in the recipe.  These allergens must be included in the ingredients list.  To make shopping easier, we summarise allergens contained in a product in an ‘allergy box’ on the pack.

The allergens are always listed in the following order:

Peanuts, nuts, sesame, shellfish, fish, milk, egg, celery, mustard, wheat gluten, rye gluten, barley gluten, oat gluten, spelt gluten, kamut gluten, soya and sulphites.

Mussels.
Cross-contamination

Where we believe that there is a real risk of a product having come into contact with allergens that could leave a customer with an allergy at risk, one of the following phrases is used in the allergy advice box:

  • “Not suitable for [named allergen] allergy sufferers due to the methods used in the production of this product” .
  • or “Not suitable for [named allergen] allergy sufferers”

Both statements mean the same – it just depends on the amount of space available on the packaging for the message.
