Removal of artifical flavour enhancers

1 January 2007 our New Years resolution is that all Sainsbury's own brand food and drink made will not contain artificial flavour enhancers. *

A year ago we challenged all of our suppliers with a huge task of not just removing HVOs, but we wanted flavour enhancers to be removed too.

We sent our suppliers and product technologists back to the kitchen to rustle up great product quality and taste Sainsbury’s customers expect, but without any nasties.

Why are flavour enhancers added? Well, flavour enhancers, such as monosodium glutamate (MG) are often added to processed food, such as crisps and snacks, to enhance the flavour, without having any distinctive flavour of their own. Some flavour enhancers have been associated with the onset of adverse reactions in some people.

*Applies to all products produced after 1 January 2007. Products produced before this time may still be on sale.
