Our fresh chickens don’t fly from abroad. They’re 100% British, born and bred.
We know that the quality and integrity of the chicken we sell is important to you, so all of the fresh chickens that Sainsbury’s sell are bred, reared and packed in the UK. In fact, we’re proud to be one of the few retailers able to say that all our fresh chicken is British. And we make sure nothing artificial is added either.
Whether you’re buying standard, corn-fed, organic or free range chicken, Sainsbury’s is working hard to continually improve welfare standards. But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what some other people have to say:
"Sainsbury’s has the most to be proud of on this important animal welfare issue." - Jamie Oliver
"Freedom Food has been working with Sainsbury's for many years and recognises and supports Sainsbury's work to improve animal welfare. By mid 2008 Sainsbury's have stated that they aim to have met or exceeded the RSPCA's welfare standards for all fresh corn-fed, 'Taste the difference' free range and SO organic chickens." - Freedom Food
"Awarded Most Improved Retailer in our supermarket awards, Sainsbury’s is committed to major changes that will benefit millions of animals." Compassion in World Farming
So when we say we’re committed to improving standards in animal welfare, we really mean it.
Here’s a quick guide to help you choose from our range of chicken.
Sainsbury’s basics chicken
Our great-value basics range of fresh chicken is only sourced from quality-assured farms, and packed to British Assured Production standards under the Red Tractor scheme.
This range offers fantastic value with no compromise on quality - you may just find that shapes and sizes vary slightly.
Fresh British chicken
Our standard range of chicken has also been sourced from British farms that meet the standards set by the Red Tractor scheme.
Every fresh chicken we sell can be traced to the exact farm where it grew up.
Corn fed chicken
Our Devonshire Red corn fed chickens are reared on farms that meet the RSPCA welfare standards for indoor chickens and approved by Freedom Food. They have room to roam and enjoy the use of perches, bales and other objects to make their environment more interesting.
Due to its corn-based diet, this chicken has a golden skin colour, improved flavour and extra succulence.
Sainsbury's Taste the difference free range chicken
Our Taste the difference chicken has been reared on small, family-run farms in the West Country.
We use a slow growing chicken and the birds are free to roam in grassy, shaded paddocks during the day and this healthy, stress-free environment helps to produce chicken with an excellent flavour and texture.
Sainsbury’s SO organic chicken
All our SO organic chickens are a slow growing breed and have been reared to strict Soil Association standards on organic farms in the West Country.
They roam freely by day in large organic pastures after each crop has been harvested. Being inquisitive creatures, they obtain some of their feed naturally from the fields. This results in a highly textured bird with a fantastic flavour.
