Sainsbury's freefrom
Read our technologist's diary
We’re so committed to improving our Sainsbury’s freefrom product range that in the autumn of 2007 three of our product developers and food technologists undertook a two-week diet, omitting all dairy, wheat and gluten.
“We wanted to really understand how we could improve our own range of Sainsbury’s freefrom products” said Kevin Hogan, Sainsbury’s freefrom food technologist.
Kevin’s freefrom diet diary
“I have written down the outline of my meals across a week and added a few meal idea’s for you to try. Every day I made sure I had my 5-a-day of fruit and veg made up of fresh fruit and veg, smoothies, dried fruit, and Sainsbury’s Taste the difference orange juice.
I also ate freefrom biscuits, mint crisps, fruit loaf, fruit and seed bread or a banana when I was peckish in between. I was on this diet for 2-weeks and it was challenging, but I was amazed how I could still eat a healthy diet. I couldn't have anything breaded or made of pastry, which in moderation are ok, but I felt a lot better for not eating them. Even after the 2 weeks I still restrict the foods containing them and I use free-from pasta all the time now!
I thought doing a freefrom diet would be fairly easy, but in fact it was hard. It has really opened my eyes to the little things I think our customers miss out on, and we’ll be striving to develop lots of great tasting products over the next 12 months”.
