100% Fairtrade bananas at Sainsbury's
A growing future.
Mr. Lynch who is a Fairtrade banana farmer and an official of the St.Lucia National Fairtrade Organization, took his ill young son to the small hospital in Dennery, a community located in St. Lucia. He was shocked by the appalling conditions that he saw, including a “Jurassic” autoclave, which meant that they had to instead sterilize equipment using a small pressure cooker. Mr Lynch submitted a request for a new autoclave to the SLNFTO. Within three months the Dennery Hospital received a brand new autoclave priced at £6,000.
Water has not always been readily available to the 374 students and 15 staff of the Richfond Combined School located in one of the banana growing areas of St Lucia. The school principal Mrs. Catherine Francis has frequently been forced to send the students home by midday during the school week, instead of the customary 3.00 pm, due to shortages of water. The early ending of the school day would mean that many students would return to empty homes, as their parents would still be away at work. So the school submitted a request to the St Lucia National Fairtrade Organisation for new water storage tanks for the school. Within two month, two 800-gallon water tanks were installed at a cost of £2400.
