Is there a closing date for applications?

Yes. Applications for the Buying, HR and Customer & Marketing Graduate schemes will close on the 31st October 2008, with applications for all other graduate and placement schemes closing on the 31st December 2008.

How long do the Graduate Schemes last?

Each scheme is unique:

  • Retail - 24 months
  • HR - 24 months
  • Logistics - 18months
  • Customer and Marketing - 18 months
  • Buying - 18 months
  • Product Technology - 18 months
  • Product Development - 18 months
  • IT - 18 months
  • Property - 18-24 months
  • Commercial - 18 months
  • Location Planning - three years
  • Online - 18 months
  • Buying (Non-Food) - 18 months
  • Merchandising (Non-Food) - 18 months
  • Product Technology (Non-Food) - 18 months

Is there a probationary period for graduates on the schemes?

Three months for all of our graduate schemes and one year placements.

What are the typical working hours?

Retail trainees are contracted to work 39 hours a week, Saturday to Sunday, typically including evenings and 3 out of 4 weekends. However as a member of the store management team the demands of your role may mean that you need to work beyond your core hours to ensure we exceed our customer's expectations.

Most Store Support Centre-based schemes are 37 hours a week (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) although some shift work is required in Supply Chain when working in a distribution centre. When on placement in Retail, you should expect to work similar hours to Retail trainees.

Note that schemes involving a qualification will also involve you in significant amounts of study.

If I'm successful when can I expect to start work?

Summer placements run from 6th July - 28th August 2009

All one year placements and graduate training schemes will start 7th September 2009.

Does Sainsbury's support study for qualifications?

Yes, in the following areas:

  • Customer and Marketing graduates may work towards the CIM qualification
  • Buying graduates work towards an internally recognised 'Certificate of Trading'
  • HR graduates may work towards the CIPD qualification

I don't have a visa to work in the UK. Will Sainsbury's support me in my application?

Sainsbury's is only in the position of accepting applications from resident workers, and those overseas nationals that can prove their ability to work within the UK. You will be required to provide your original passport, or other original documentation proving your eligibility to work in the UK, if you are successful in obtain a position with us.

Where could I be working for my store placement?

All Store schemes begin with a placement in one of our stores to ensure you gain a real understanding of our customer's needs and how your role can make a difference. For graduates based in our London Store Support Centre and Logistics, your placement will be based in a store within London. For graduates based in Coventry, your placement will take place in the Coventry area.
