Applications for the 2008 intake are now closed. To apply for the 2009 graduate and placement opportunities, please revisit the site on 4th August 2008 or email grad.recruitment@sainsburys.co.uk to register your interest.

What does the scheme involve?

From predicting sales to managing budgets, astute financial decisions underpin everything we do. The finance function is responsible for millions of pounds and is vital in helping to meet the needs of customers and shareholders.

Your roles will be diverse: you could be providing insight into the period accounting process and challenging the cost, analysing store investment or implementing a finance system and redesigning the business process surrounding it. You will develop a sound knowledge of accounting practices, build your commercial understanding and learn how to lead large teams. The CIMA or ACCA qualifications are key and we will support you with study leave, whichever course you choose.

You’ll complete an initial 3 month placement in one of our stores followed by a placement at our Accounting Centre in Streatham, South London or our London Store Support Centre. The earlier placements enable you to get the experience you need to obtain a professional qualification; however as you progress you gain more control over the placements you do.

What are we looking for?

People with drive to take control of their own career development and the discipline to balance their studies for CIMA or ACCA with day-to-day work and their social life, will find the scheme the perfect launch pad to their careers. We will also require a minimum 2.1 or above in a numerate degree discipline.

What skills will you develop?

You’ll develop a highly effective combination of generalist business skills such as leadership, management, negotiation, presentation and finance specific skills. Each of your different placements will help expand your knowledge into different areas of the business. Ready access to senior colleagues and the Scheme Manager means that every day presents the opportunity to learn new skills and hone existing ones.

What are the benefits?

  • £23k starting salary with excellent salary progression
  • 22 days holiday
  • 10% staff discount after six months
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Opportunities to have a powerful impact on a real business
  • The CIMA/ACCA qualification is offered as part of the scheme (including financial rewards for passing key stages)
  • Responsibility for managing large budgets
  • Rapid career development (especially when fully CIMA/ACCA-qualified)
