Whatever their budget, our customers want healthy, fresh, tasty food that's been sourced with integrity. Our history of supporting British farmers has helped us deliver exactly that. This support extends beyond the products we stock to the work we do with farmers helping them expand capacity and build sustainable businesses.
There's a huge demand for organic milk in the UK and in the past we've struggled to get enough pints on our shelves to meet it. That's why we've introduced Farm Promise, a scheme to help dairy farmers convert to organic standards.
It's a boost for British farmers and it helps our customers put the food they want in their trolleys.
Working with farmers - and countless other suppliers - mean that trainees like James Curtis on the Buying Scheme meet an amazing variety of people and get the opportunity to make a real difference to the businesses we work with.
But as James points out, the difference you can make to yourself is just as important.
If I notice that my negotiating could be sharper - one of the most important skills you need as a buyer - I can observe a colleague to see what best practice looks like. On a corporate level making a difference is about knowing what the competition are doing and making sure that we are one step ahead of them, better than them and getting better, faster than they are.
