Our customers want quality, fresh and seasonal food and we're determined to get them as much of it as possible, whatever the weather. That's why we go out of our way to find Great British Produce: it's good for our farmers, good for our customers and, most importantly, it tastes brilliant.

It's part of Chris Brown's job to get Great British Produce into our stores at a price that's right for the supplier, Sainsbury's and our customers. But his work is about more than money and margins.

“I've learnt things on the Buying Scheme I never thought I would: how food is grown, processed, packaged and shipped. My placement in fresh foods has been especially challenging; your suppliers can get knocked sideways by weather or disease and your week gets knocked sideways too.

I need to buy products that keep our customers coming back to the stores. And that takes me to some interesting places; my favourite's a watercress supplier who uses the water from a natural, underground lake to wash his produce. No need for pricey mains water there!

If I'm not visiting suppliers and negotiating with them, I'll be working on pricing and promotions with a colleague, visiting a store to get some insight into how customers are shopping for the products I buy, or maybe working on a business plan.”
