We know that our customers want to understand what's in their food. We also know that they find our approach to telling them refreshingly frank and helpful. In 2005 we pioneered Sainsbury's Traffic Light Labelling and it's now appearing on over 5000 products. In fact 80 % of people questioned by Netmums preferred this approach to the alternative scheme that details guideline daily amounts.

Getting ideas like these up and running involves trainees right across the business. Vikki Walton is training on the Product Technology Scheme. Her job is as varied as the 30,000 products our stores carry.

“One day I could be working with one of our chefs on a new product; the next might find me digging my way through a field of salad leaves or sampling a product shipment from Ghana or Kenya.”

Tamaraye Sawacha is on the HR Scheme. She makes sure our store colleagues know all about our products and how we label them; if a customer asks a colleague about our Traffic Light Labelling, it's Tamaraye's training that helps them answer.

Her days might be spent running workshops or product tastings with in-store colleagues to keep them up-to-speed with developments.

“My work has direct impact on the way our customers experience our stores and products and that keeps me going when things get a little stressful.”

Natalie Dunn's focus never strays from the customer. She helped to co-ordinate our research into the Traffic Light Labelling.

“I spend a lot of time in store, working out how ideas like Traffic Light Labelling can have the maximum impact possible. We study how customers shop in our stores and develop store layouts and signage that works with the reality of people's shopping trips.”

An average day could see Natalie listening in on a customer research group or discussing the details of pack graphics with a designer. In other words: there is no average day.
