Business success is at the heart of everything we do. So, winning Supermarket of the Year for the second time at the 2007 Retail Industry Awards was cause for celebration.
And of course, scooping the number one spot is more than just a team effort; every Sainsbury's colleague has done their bit and trainees are no exception.
Retail trainee Kate Dunwoody helps ring the changes in our stores. I spend a lot of time training in-store colleagues in new processes and getting their managers to engage with the changes. Seeing the results of my work reflected in a store's performance is very satisfying. Vicky Shaw works with our Property team. She makes sure the stores get built in the first place.
The work is incredibly challenging. We manage regional teams of architects, town planners, property agents and highways consultants; all of them contribute to plans for a new supermarket. It's amazing when the plans come together and we gain consent to build.
Chris Jones' role on the Commercial team depends in part on insights into the way people work their way around a store.
It's our job to get as much value from every square foot of our stores as we possibly can. We've looked closely at how people shop and changed store layouts in line with our findings. We now know that less clutter makes for more sales. It's great to get real insight into our customers and see the benefits on our balance sheets.
