History: A pioneer of Australian wine, Jim Barry helped define the Clare Valley as a benchmark region for Riesling. Founded by Jim and Nancy Barry in 1959, the estate is now run by the third generation of the family. This family-owned winery produces premium, quality wines that express a sense of place, using fruit from a mosaic of unique vineyard sites. One of these is the high-altitude Lodge Hill Vineyard, ideal for producing the steely, minerally Rieslings for which the region is renowned.
Regional information: The Clare Valley is one of Australia's most renowned and historic wine regions, with a heritage dating to 1851. Situated in the Mount Lofty Ranges, its unique terroir is shaped by elevation, ancient soils, and a continental climate with high diurnal temperature differences. This has earned global recognition for its world-class Riesling and Shiraz, alongside exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The cool nights preserve the crisp acidity and delicate flavours for which its Rieslings are famous.
Vinification: Grapes are harvested in the cool of the night to minimise oxidation and preserve flavour. The fruit is immediately pressed at the winery with no skin contact. After settling for 24-48 hours, the juice is racked off solids and inoculated with a commercial yeast. Fermentation is cool (14-16°C) and lasts two to three weeks. The Jim Barry winemaking philosophy is to be as unintrusive as possible, allowing the wine to reflect its true sense of origin.
