History: Over three centuries, Spier has brought together good wine, regenerative farming, contemporary South African art and warm hospitality - guided by one belief: good wine comes from good people and good soil. Our cellar is led by Johan Jordaan, twice named Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker. Home to one of South Africa's largest contemporary art collections, Spier draws on that art for this range's striking labels. This label features "Zig Zag" by Audrey Anderson - a winding Little Karoo road, a full expression of South Africanness.
Regional information: These vines, planted between 14 and 24 years ago, grow across undulating hills of decomposed granite and weathered sandstone, some as far as 80 kilometres from the coast. Cool air off the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains keeps the ripening slow and steady. We then blend parcels from these different pockets together - each bringing something of its own - to build a wine with real depth and character.
Vinification: We harvest the grapes at their ripe, flavourful best, then destem and crush them into stainless-steel tanks, where a mix of cultured and wild yeast coaxes out all that delicious berry fruit. After fermentation, 20% of the wine spends 8 to 10 months in French-oak barrels, while the rest matures alongside French oak staves in tank - a combination that adds a gentle layer of spice and length without ever getting in the way of the fruit.
